Mississippi Equipment Operators Put Skills to the Test at MDOT Roadeo

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) recently hosted its annual state equipment operators Roadeo in Gulfport, bringing together top talent from across the state to compete in a series of challenging events. 'We have operators that can work directly adjacent to you and your wife as y'all are passing by on the interstate, maybe doing 70 miles per hour,' Hutson explained. 'We know that those operators won't get that bushhog out in the lane of travel; they won't swing that skid steer or that motor grader out there and potentially cause harm, damage, death or injury.' This emphasis on safety is a critical aspect of the Roadeo, as it highlights the importance of careful operation and attention to detail in high-pressure environments.

For competitors like Cobey Lane, a skid steer driver who was making his first appearance at the state-level competition, the Roadeo is an opportunity to test his skills against the best in the state. Despite being relatively new to the job, Lane has learned quickly and is eager to continue improving his abilities. 'I came to work at this job not knowing how to do anything,' Lane said. 'In a short amount of time, I learned pretty fast, and competing against these guys makes me get better every day.' The camaraderie among competitors is a key aspect of the Roadeo, as operators come together to share knowledge, learn from one another, and push themselves to be their best.

The Roadeo course itself is designed to simulate the challenges that operators might face on a real job site, with sharp turns, precise movements, and obstacles to navigate. Being patient means very smooth. You really have to take your time. If you rush it, you're going to get hurt. Safety is always first. You have to be safe.'
