Wagga Public Students Embark on a Chilling Night to Raise Awareness for Homelessness

As the world grapples with the ever-present issue of homelessness, a group of students from Wagga Wagga Public School are taking a bold step to understand the plight of those living on the streets. This Friday, around 35 students, accompanied by parents and school staff, will brave the freezing cold and spend a night sleeping outside as part of the school's Vinnies School Sleepout.

The annual initiative, run by the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, aims to give school communities a glimpse into the life of those who are forced to sleep rough, while raising funds and awareness for homelessness services. For the students of Wagga Wagga Public School, this sleepout comes at a time when their city is facing a growing homelessness crisis, one that has captured national attention and sparked debates on how to address the issue.

According to Year 5/6 teacher Alexandra Brentnall, the sleepout is not just about raising money, but also about educating the students on the realities of homelessness. Brentnall emphasized that the experience will allow the kids to break stereotypes and misconceptions about who the homeless are, highlighting that homelessness can affect anyone, regardless of their background. This is particularly important in Wagga, where many people are struggling with housing stress, couch surfing, or sleeping in cars.

The students' participation in the sleepout is also influenced by the local controversy surrounding the treatment of rough sleepers in Wilks Park and by the Murrumbidgee River. Some students have been following the news and are aware of the debates on whether and where homeless people should be relocated. The school hopes that this experience will inspire the students to become part of the solution in the future, perhaps volunteering or working to address homelessness when they are older.

However, the school also acknowledges that the students' experience will be vastly different from those who are actually homeless. As Brentnall pointed out, the students will have the luxury of returning to the comfort of their homes after just one night, a stark contrast to the reality faced by many homeless individuals. The school is also organizing a donation drive, encouraging students to bring in blankets and non-perishable foods to support local services.

Vinnies has been working tirelessly to support those in need, with over 2500 people assisted in Wagga and neighboring communities over the past year. The organization provides a range of services, including food, clothing, bedding, household bills, and emotional support. Alarmingly, more than one in three people supported by Vinnies locally are experiencing housing stress, highlighting the urgent need for action to address homelessness.

The Wagga Wagga Public School Sleepout aims to raise $1000 to support local services, with over $500 already raised. As the students prepare to face the cold, they are not only raising money but also awareness about the harsh realities of homelessness. This event serves as a reminder that homelessness is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach, one that involves not just providing temporary solutions but also addressing the root causes of the problem.
