Global Carbon Council Gains ICVCM Approval, Solidifying Position in Voluntary Carbon Markets

The Global Carbon Council (GCC), a pioneering force in the global carbon market, has reached a significant milestone by receiving approval from the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) for its Standard on ICVCM Eligibility of Projects and Issuances as CCP-Eligible. This achievement underscores the GCC's rigorous governance and registry systems, aligning with the highest international standards.

Established in Qatar in 2016 by the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD), the GCC has been at the forefront of efforts to combat climate change through the promotion of high-integrity carbon credits. With this ICVCM approval, the GCC strengthens its position as the only carbon crediting program based in the Global South to have accreditation under ICAO's CORSIA framework and CCP-Eligibility approval from the ICVCM.

This recognition reflects the broader evolution of voluntary carbon markets toward stronger integrity, transparency, and internationally aligned governance frameworks. For project owners and stakeholders engaging with the GCC Program, this approval serves as a clear signal that credits issued under the GCC Program meet the highest benchmarks of environmental integrity, transparency, and international credibility.

Dr. Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman of the Global Carbon Council, expressed his enthusiasm for the landmark recognition, stating, 'We welcome this approval from the ICVCM, affirming the GCC Program's standing as a high-integrity carbon crediting program on the international stage. This reflects the strength and rigor of the GCC Program's regulatory framework, which is robust, dynamic, and fully aligned with the most demanding global standards, including the ICVCM's Core Carbon Principles and CORSIA.'

The GCC's journey to this milestone has been marked by significant achievements. To date, the organization has received over 1,634 climate-positive GHG project submissions from more than 50 countries and has registered over 213 projects across sectors such as renewable energy, methane avoidance, energy efficiency, waste management, and transport. Moreover, the GCC has issued over 15 million ACCs (Assigned Carbon Credits), contributing to the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.

The approval by the ICVCM not only highlights the GCC's commitment to operational excellence but also underscores its role in driving meaningful progress toward global climate goals. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of climate change, the importance of robust, transparent, and internationally recognized carbon crediting programs cannot be overstated. The GCC's achievement serves as a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and adherence to the highest standards of integrity in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.

Looking ahead, the GCC's CCP-Eligibility approval is poised to enhance buyer confidence and market trust in GCC-issued credits and frameworks. This, in turn, is expected to stimulate further investment in climate-positive projects, facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy and supporting the realization of global climate objectives. As the voluntary carbon market continues to evolve, the GCC's leadership and commitment to excellence position it as a key player in the global effort to combat climate change.
