As the monsoon season gains momentum in Hyderabad, Director General of Police (DGP) C.V. Anand has taken a proactive stance to ensure the city's preparedness for potential flooding and waterlogging. On Tuesday, DGP Anand chaired a coordination meeting at Malkam Cheruvu in Kondapur, emphasizing the need for a unified response to minimize public inconvenience caused by heavy rainfall.
The meeting, attended by key officials from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Irrigation Department, and Police Department, aimed to prevent urban flooding, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions during the monsoon season. Government Adviser for Irrigation Sudarshan Reddy, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan, and Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Commissioner Ranganath were among the notable attendees.
DGP Anand stressed the importance of identifying vulnerable areas and taking preventive measures to avoid traffic congestion and maintain smooth vehicular movement. He also instructed police personnel to maintain constant surveillance in low-lying areas, flood-prone localities, major traffic junctions, and other critical locations across the city. The Police Department has been maintaining a high level of preparedness to ensure citizens do not face difficulties due to heavy rains and waterlogging.
The DGP directed officials to identify alternative traffic routes and disseminate timely information to the public whenever required. He also emphasized the need for emergency response systems to remain fully operational, enabling swift action during any unforeseen situation arising from heavy rainfall. Special engineering teams have been constituted to conduct field inspections in and around flood-prone locations, including Malkam Cheruvu, Khajaguda Lake, and areas surrounding Biodiversity Junction.
These teams will examine water flow channels, encroachments, drainage connectivity, and other factors contributing to water stagnation and flooding. They have been tasked with submitting detailed reports recommending both immediate corrective measures and long-term solutions to address recurring waterlogging problems. DGP Anand underscored the importance of close coordination among the Police, Irrigation Department, GHMC, HYDRAA, and other agencies for effective flood management and public safety.
He urged all departments to identify problem areas proactively and implement corrective measures without delay. The DGP also cautioned officials against negligence or complacency, reiterating that public safety must remain the foremost priority during the monsoon season. With the monsoon season expected to intensify in the coming weeks, Hyderabad's residents can take comfort in the knowledge that the city's authorities are taking proactive steps to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall and flooding.
Hyderabad's history of flooding and waterlogging is well-documented, with the city experiencing severe flooding in 2020, which resulted in significant damage to property and infrastructure. The city's topography, with its numerous lakes and water bodies, makes it prone to flooding during heavy rainfall. However, with the coordinated efforts of the Police, GHMC, and other agencies, Hyderabad is better equipped to handle the challenges posed by the monsoon season.
As the city prepares for the worst, residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. With DGP Anand's leadership and the collective efforts of the city's authorities, Hyderabad is poised to navigate the monsoon season with minimal disruption and maximum safety.
