A severe heatwave alert has been issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) for several districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning of abnormally high temperatures from June 8 to June 11. The alert comes as the region is expected to experience a significant surge in temperatures, with some areas predicted to reach as high as 46°C.
According to the PDMA, the southern districts of Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, and Karak are expected to bear the brunt of the heatwave, with temperatures likely to remain 4°C to 6°C above seasonal averages during the four-day period. In Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, and Haripur, temperatures could climb to around 45°C, posing a significant threat to the health and well-being of residents.
The PDMA has directed local authorities to establish heatstroke prevention centers and cooling points in vulnerable areas, while Rescue 1122 and fire brigade services have been placed on high alert to handle emergencies. The authority has also warned that the extreme heat could trigger dust storms and powerful winds, exacerbating the already critical situation.
The heatwave is expected to have a significant impact on the region's water reservoirs, with the prolonged dry spell likely to accelerate snowmelt in the higher areas of the province. This could lead to water scarcity and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activities during peak daytime hours, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related diseases. The PDMA has also urged people to stay informed about the latest weather updates and follow safety guidelines to minimize the risks associated with the heatwave.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has experienced severe heatwaves in the past, with the region's unique geography and climate making it prone to extreme weather events. In recent years, the province has witnessed a significant increase in temperatures, with the mercury often soaring above 40°C during the summer months. The PDMA has been working to enhance its disaster management capabilities, including the establishment of early warning systems and emergency response plans.
The heatwave alert issued by the PDMA serves as a stark reminder of the need for effective disaster management and climate resilience strategies in the region. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, it is essential for governments, communities, and individuals to work together to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather events and ensure the safety and well-being of all.
