Canada Post has unveiled a new set of stamps, titled Places of Pride, to commemorate the contributions and struggles of Canada's 2SLGBTQIA+ pioneers. This second and final set of stamps highlights four pivotal sites that have played a significant role in shaping the country's 2SLGBTQIA+ history.
The four new stamps pay tribute to The 519, a historic establishment in Toronto, Metamorphosis, a trailblazing gathering in Saskatoon, Little Sister's, a landmark bookstore in Vancouver, and The Turret, a groundbreaking event in Halifax. These locations have been instrumental in the fight for equality and freedom for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community in Canada.
The Places of Pride stamp issue is a testament to the power of community and the importance of preserving and celebrating the history of marginalized groups. The stamps feature illustrations that capture the essence of these turning points in Canadian history, serving as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the 2SLGBTQIA+ rights movement.
Last year, Canada Post issued the first set of four Pride stamps, honoring Club Carousel in Calgary, Truxx in Montréal, Hanlan's Point Beach in Toronto, and the 3rd North American Native Gay & Lesbian Gathering in Beausejour, Manitoba. This year's issue is designed by Kelly Small of Intents & Purposes Inc., illustrated by Tim Singleton, and printed by Lowe-Martin.
The stamps and collectibles will be available at canadapost.ca and at select postal outlets across Canada beginning June 5. The issue includes a booklet of eight Permanent domestic rate stamps and four Official First Day Covers, whose cancel sites are Toronto for The 519, Saskatoon for Metamorphosis, Vancouver for Little Sister's, and Halifax for The Turret.
