Defying Adversity: The Inspiring Story of Sam Seward, a Teenager Who Won't Let Leukemia Define Him

At the May 22 graduation of North Oconee High School’s senior class, over 300 students crossed the stage and received their diplomas, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Among them was Sam Seward, an exceptional young man who has faced unimaginable challenges and yet, has continued to uplift those around him with his unwavering optimism and resilience.

Sam Seward is many things: an Eagle Scout, a musician, and a high-achieving scholar. However, it is his recent diagnosis with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) that could have easily defined him, but instead, he has chosen to rise above it, refusing to let cancer dictate his life. With a mindset that is both remarkable and inspiring, Sam has continued to pursue his passions, even in the face of adversity.

While undergoing treatment at Emory Hospital, Sam found solace in folding origami cranes, a practice that not only brought him peace but also allowed him to spread positivity to other patients. The story behind the origami cranes is a powerful one, rooted in Japanese culture, where these delicate creatures are believed to symbolize good fortune. According to legend, if one folds a thousand cranes, they will be granted a wish. For Sam, this tradition took on a deeper meaning, as he folded cranes for the Wishing Crane Project, a initiative that aims to bring hope and joy to those who are ill.

Sam’s journey with leukemia began on March 19, when he received his diagnosis. Despite the challenges that lay ahead, he remained determined to stay positive and active. With the support of his friends and family, Sam continued to fold cranes, even from his hospital bed. His friends from the Wishing Crane Project reciprocated his kindness by sending him a box full of cranes, which they hung from the ceiling of his hospital room, creating a breathtaking display of color and hope.

As Sam navigated the ups and downs of his treatment, he made it a point to stay on his feet, both physically and emotionally. He would often take walks around the hospital, delivering cranes to other patients and reminding them that they were not alone in their struggles. This selfless act not only lifted the spirits of those around him but also served as a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for resilience and compassion.

Sam’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. His courage and generosity have inspired countless people, and his legacy will continue to ripple out, touching the lives of everyone he meets. As he looks to the future, Sam remains committed to spreading positivity and making a difference in the world, one origami crane at a time.
