Fr. James was born on March 26, 1938, in Chapman, Nebraska, to Francis and Loretta (Evers) Janovec. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Libory Catholic Church in St. Libory, where his family farmed until his parents' tragic death in an automobile accident in 1951. Following this devastating loss, James lived with his grandmother in Merrick County and attended District 29 in Merrick County, graduating from St. Mary's Cathedral High School in Grand Island in 1956.

Fr. James' calling to the priesthood led him to St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, Colorado, where he completed his BA, philosophy, and theology degrees in 1964. He was ordained to the priesthood in St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island by Bishop John L. Paschang on May 21, 1964. Throughout his career, Fr. James served as a pastor in various parishes across Nebraska, including Bridgeport, Eddyville, Ainsworth, Scottsbluff, Valentine, Sutherland, and Wood River.

Fr. James' ministry was marked by his deep connection with the ranch and farm communities, where he found solace in the simple, rustic way of life. His experiences as a young boy, living on a farm and relying on the land for sustenance, instilled in him a profound appreciation for the beauty of nature and the importance of community. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on May 6, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral, with interment to follow at St. Libory Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place on May 5, from 5-7 p.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral, with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Grand Island Central Catholic Scholarship Fund, St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Libory Catholic Church, or Catholic Relief Services.
