This remarkable achievement marks the culmination of an extraordinary season, with the team finishing undefeated at 34-0. The War Eagles’ impressive performance has earned them a fifth-place ranking in the MaxPreps national rankings, solidifying their position as one of the best teams in the country.
Under the guidance of head coach Doug Frye, the War Eagles have demonstrated unwavering dedication and unrelenting passion for the sport. When asked about his team’s success, Frye praised their resilience and perseverance, stating, “When it got tough, somebody got up on us, they'd come back. They never quit, they never fade. They kept fighting and fighting. This group is very special.” Frye’s high praise is a testament to the team’s exceptional chemistry and cohesion, which has been the driving force behind their triumph.
Gray Collegiate’s softball program has a rich history of excellence, with the team having claimed multiple state titles in recent years. Last season, the War Eagles finished with a 32-3 record and defeated York in the 4A championships. The year before, they won 33 games and secured the 2A title by defeating Marion. The team also won the 2A championship in 2022, demonstrating their consistent dominance in the sport.
The War Eagles’ victory over AC Flora was a decisive one, with the team winning the first game 7-1 at home and the second game 11-1 on the road. Sophomore Makenzie Sease played a crucial role in the close-out game, hitting two home runs in the first two innings to set the tone for the rest of the game. The team’s lead continued to grow throughout the game, with Gray ultimately emerging victorious.
As the team prepares to move up to 5A next season following the latest SCHSL realignment, they are confident that their success will not wane. With many players from this season’s squad returning, the War Eagles are poised to continue their dominance in the sport. Coach Frye expressed his optimism, stating, “We’re not going anywhere. We’ve got a bunch of young kids out here who can play.” The team’s ability to compete against anyone has been proven time and time again, and they are eager to take on new challenges in the upcoming season.
Senior Aspen Boulware concluded her high school career on a high note, hitting a solo home run in the final game and finishing with two hits, two runs, and two RBIs. Boulware has been an integral part of the team’s three-peat, establishing herself as one of the best players in the country and winning the S.C. State Gatorade Player of the Year award. Her presence will be deeply felt, but her legacy will continue to inspire her teammates as she moves on to play for the University of South Carolina.
Peyton Hendrix pitched a remarkable game, earning the win and finishing with 10 strikeouts, six hits, one run, and seven walks. Hendrix’s impressive performance showcased her exceptional skill and dedication to the sport. Coach Frye praised Hendrix, stating, “She’s 38-0. If you go to war, you want Peyton. She’s going to bat.” Hendrix’s unwavering commitment to the team has been a driving force behind their success, and her contributions will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.
