India's Wrestling Team Gears Up for Asian Games with Intensive Foreign Training Camps

As the Asian Games approach, India's wrestling team is leaving no stone unturned in its preparation. With the event scheduled to begin in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan from September 19, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has decided to send its men wrestlers from both freestyle and Greco-Roman styles for separate training camps in foreign countries.

Six selected freestyle wrestlers, along with their respective sparring partners, will head to Armenia for a 20-day camp, followed by a tournament in Russia. Similarly, the Greco-Roman wrestlers will embark on a training-cum-exposure tour in Uzbekistan. This strategic move is expected to provide the wrestlers with top-notch training and exposure, helping them fine-tune their skills and gain a competitive edge before the Asian Games.

The WFI has already received administrative sanction for the foreign training camps and is awaiting visas. The men's freestyle coach, Emzarios Shako Bentinidis from Georgia, will accompany the team to Armenia, while Russia's Gogi Koguashvili will be with the Greco-Roman team in Uzbekistan. The women wrestlers, meanwhile, will train at the national camp under the supervision of Japan's Kosei Akaishi.

Earlier this year, the WFI appointed foreign coaches for men and women wrestlers, including USA's Ian Butler as the high-performance director. This move is part of the federation's efforts to enhance the team's performance and bring in fresh perspectives and techniques. The Indian wrestling team has a rich history of medal wins at the Asian Games, with 65 medals, including 11 gold, won so far.

The 18-member team, comprising six wrestlers each in three styles, was selected following rigorous selection trials held in New Delhi and Lucknow. The team boasts an impressive lineup, including Olympic bronze medallist Aman Sehrawat (FS 57kg), world No. 1 Sujeet Kalkal (FS 65kg), and two-time World Championships medallist Antim Panghal (WW 53kg). With a strong team in place, the WFI is confident of a better show this time around, aiming to make up for the lack of gold medals in the previous edition.

The exposure-cum-training camp is expected to help the wrestlers prepare better and put up a stellar performance in Japan. The WFI is also working on sending the women wrestlers to Japan at least 10 days before the Asian Games for acclimatization and training. With the team's firepower and the federation's strategic planning, India is poised to make a significant impact at the Asian Games and bring home a haul of medals.
