IPL Teams Put on High Alert: BCCI Issues Strict Protocols to Counter Honey Trap Risks

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is just around the corner, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasissued a stern warning to all participating teams, cautioning them about the dangers of honey-trapping and other security breaches during the tournament.

According to a seven-page advisory sent to franchises, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized the importance of staying vigilant against situations that could expose players and support staff to legal or reputational risks. The advisory highlights the well-documented risks of targeted compromise and honey-trapping that pervade high-profile sporting environments, and the possibility of incidents giving rise to serious legal allegations cannot be discounted.

The warning comes amidst growing concerns globally around athlete security, personal conduct, and vulnerability to exploitation during major sporting tournaments. The BCCI has introduced stricter rules regarding hotel room access, player movement, accreditation checks, and conduct inside tournament venues to mitigate these risks.

The board has also flagged concerns over players and support staff leaving team hotels without informing security officials. Under the new guidelines, players and support staff must now obtain clearance before leaving team hotels and inform management in advance about any personal or recreational movement outside. The designated Security Liaison Officers (SLOs) and Team Integrity Officers (TIOs) will maintain detailed movement logs for all team members.

The BCCI has additionally instructed all players, officials, and franchise representatives to prominently display accreditation cards within tournament venues. The board noted that some individuals had shown reluctance in presenting accreditation for verification during security checks, which is a serious concern that needs to be addressed.

The IPL has a history of being a high-stakes tournament, with millions of dollars at play and a massive global audience. The BCCI's move to issue strict protocols is a welcome step in ensuring the safety and security of all participants. With the tournament set to kick off soon, teams will need to be vigilant and proactive in mitigating these risks to avoid any untoward incidents.
