Jasprit Bumrah Gears Up for England ODIs and Sri Lanka Tests with Intensive Red-Ball Practice

Indian cricket fans have reason to rejoice as ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah has begun practicing with the red-ball, signaling his preparations for the upcoming Test season. After a tumultuous Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign, where he managed just four wickets in 13 matches at an average of 102.50 and an economy rate of 8.36, Bumrah is looking to rediscover his form ahead of crucial fixtures against England and Sri Lanka.

Bumrah, who was rested for the T20Is against Ireland and England, has been named in India's ODI squad for the three-match series against England starting July 14. He will also be part of the Asian Games lineup from September 19 onwards. Although he missed the one-off Test against Afghanistan at home, which was not part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle, Bumrah is now focusing on the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, scheduled to take place in Galle and Colombo from August 15 to 27.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the schedule for the Sri Lanka Tests, with the first match set to begin at the Galle International Stadium on August 15, followed by the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo from August 23. Both matches are slated to start at 10:00 AM IST, and Bumrah's presence will be crucial in India's quest to secure a positive outcome.

Bumrah's last competitive cricket match was the IPL 2026, which was a forgettable experience for the pace spearhead. However, it is worth noting that he played a pivotal role in India's ICC T20 World Cup triumph, emerging as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in eight innings at an average of 12.42 and an economy rate of 6.21. His finest moment came in the final against New Zealand, where he claimed 4/15 and earned the 'Player of the Match' award.

As India gears up for the Sri Lanka Tests, Bumrah's red-ball practice is a welcome sign. The team's road to the ICC World Test Championship mace is still uncertain, with a lackluster performance in the ongoing cycle, including a 2-2 series draw against England, a 2-0 series win at home against West Indies, and a disappointing 0-2 whitewash at home against South Africa. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, starting from January 21 to March 3, will be India's final assignment in the WTC 2025-27 cycle, and a strong showing will be essential to salvage their campaign.

From November 19 onwards, India will also play two Tests against New Zealand away from home at Wellington and Christchurch. With the Test calendar packed and intense, Bumrah's preparation and form will be vital in determining India's fortunes. As one of the world's premier fast bowlers, Bumrah's ability to deliver in high-pressure situations will be put to the test, and his red-ball practice is a reassuring indication of his commitment to the team's cause.
