The Cleveland Browns community is mourning the loss of Robert Ptacek, a former eighth-round pick who passed away on June 29, 2026, at the age of 89. Ptacek, also known as "Bob," left an indelible mark on the football world and the lives of those around him. Born on April 23, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio, he grew up to become a talented athlete, playing multiple positions, including quarterback, running back, and defense, during his high school and college years.
Ptacek attended Holy Name High School, where he honed his skills before being accepted into the University of Michigan. His college football career, which spanned from 1956 to 1958, was nothing short of remarkable. He was named the MVP in his senior year and selected to play in prestigious games such as the East-West Shrine Game, the Hula Bowl, and the College All-Star Game against the reigning NFL champion Baltimore Colts. His impressive performance earned him MVP honors in all three games.
The Cleveland Browns took notice of Ptacek's exceptional talent, drafting him 87th overall in the eighth round in 1959. At just 22 years old, he played in 12 games as the team's quarterback, making three attempts for 13 rushing yards. Although his NFL career was short-lived, Ptacek's passion for football led him to the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 1960. He joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders, where he spent the next six years, earning CFL All-Star honors and being inducted into the team's Plaza of Honour.
Following a career-ending injury in 1966, Ptacek hung up his cleats and transitioned into a successful career in transportation sales. He started working with Yellow Freight, building a thriving business and forming lasting relationships with clients and coworkers. As his obituary so eloquently stated, "The connections he made with clients and coworkers grew far beyond business – turning into lifelong friendships."
However, for Ptacek, family was always the top priority. He met his wife, Donna, in high school, and they were together for an astonishing 73 years, married for 68 years. His love and devotion to his family were evident in the way he lived his life. Ptacek is survived by his wife, four children, seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, who remember him as a humorous and loving family man, always equipped with mischievous and well-timed one-liners.
A private family service will be held on July 17th to celebrate Ptacek's life, a testament to the profound impact he had on those around him. As we reflect on his remarkable journey, we remember Robert Ptacek not only as a talented football player but also as a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and a true legend in the Cleveland Browns community.
