Legendary Coach Steve Jaksa Inducted into Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame

Steve Jaksa, the renowned coach who transformed Nouvel Catholic Central's baseball program into a state powerhouse, will be inducted into the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2026. Jaksa's remarkable coaching career, which spanned over a decade, was marked by unprecedented success, including two state titles in 1990 and 1997.

Jaksa's journey at Nouvel began with a blank slate, literally. When he first visited the school's baseball field, he was met with a landscape of weeds and a single backstop. Undeterred, Jaksa saw an opportunity to build a program from scratch, and his vision ultimately led to the creation of a state baseball powerhouse. During his tenure, the Panthers compiled an impressive 353-106 record from 1987 to 1997.

Under Jaksa's guidance, Nouvel claimed a Class C state title in 1990, with star pitcher Aaron Knieper leading the charge. The Panthers dominated Pewamo-Westphalia 17-3 in the semifinals and Homer 10-5 in the final. Seven years later, Nouvel added another state title to its collection, this time in Class B, with Joe Fahndrich and Tim Turner instrumental in the team's 7-1 win over Harper Woods Notre Dame in the semifinals and a thrilling 3-2 victory over DeWitt in the state final.

Jaksa's impact on Nouvel extended far beyond the baseball field. He also served as the school's athletic director and director of development, playing a pivotal role in upgrading the school's sports facilities. During his tenure, Nouvel built a new soccer field, softball field, and practice fields, while also renovating the football field and baseball field. The school even added a state-of-the-art football scoreboard, a testament to Jaksa's tireless efforts to elevate the athletic program.

The community rallied behind Jaksa's vision, and the results were astounding. The school's athletic program flourished, with 43 teams competing in 20 different sports during Jaksa's time at the helm. The Panthers became a force to be reckoned with, attracting top talent from across the state and packing the stands for basketball games against powerhouses like Buena Vista and Detroit Country Day.

Jaksa's induction into the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to his dedication, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
