Smart Redefines Urban Mobility with Concept #2: A New Era of Electric Vehicles

Smart Redefines Urban Mobility with Concept #2: A New Era of Electric Vehicles

Smart, a pioneering automaker in the realm of compact city cars, has unveiled its latest innovation – the Concept #2, a two-seater electric vehicle (EV) that pays homage to the brand's roots while embracing modernity. The Concept #2 was recently showcased at Smart's global brand event in Beijing, marking a significant shift in the company's approach to urban mobility.

The Concept #2 is a callback to Smart's compact car heritage, evoking memories of the iconic Smart Fortwo, which was discontinued in 2024. However, this new concept car is noticeably larger, measuring 2,792 mm in length, and boasts a more modern interpretation shaped by its partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Geely. The Concept #2 retains the defining traits of a classic Smart car, featuring a two-door layout, minimal front overhang, and wheels pushed out to the corners for maximum interior space.

In terms of aesthetics, the Concept #2 features sharp LED headlights paired with daytime running lights that spell out '#2,' giving it a distinctive identity. The front grille draws inspiration from luxury luggage, while the use of leather strap door handles adds an unconventional touch. Other notable elements include a gold-finished roof and an overall styling direction that feels more expressive than previous Smart models. As with most concept cars, some of these details may not make it to production.

Underpinning the Concept #2 is a new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), which enables significant improvements in performance and usability. Smart is targeting a driving range of up to 400 km (CLTC), a substantial leap compared to the roughly 135 km offered by older electric Smart models. Like previous Smart EVs, the Concept #2 is expected to retain a rear-mounted motor driving the rear wheels, supporting a tight turning radius that remains one of the brand's key advantages in urban driving (and parking) scenarios.

Charging-wise, the company claims the battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes, making it an attractive option for urban dwellers who require a vehicle that can keep up with their fast-paced lifestyle. The Concept #2's focus on urban mobility is further reinforced by its compact design, which makes it highly relevant for dense urban environments.

Although Smart has yet to reveal the interior, the company promises a more premium cabin experience. Given Mercedes-Benz's involvement, expectations lean towards higher-quality materials and a more refined finish compared to earlier models. The Concept #2's interior is expected to feature a range of innovative technologies, including a state-of-the-art infotainment system and advanced driver assistance systems.

The Concept #2 is not just a concept car; it's a statement of intent from Smart. The company is committed to redefining urban mobility and providing innovative solutions for the challenges faced by city dwellers. With the Concept #2, Smart is poised to revolutionize the way we think about urban transportation, and its impact is likely to be felt across the automotive industry.
