Celebrating the Life of Daniel Ball Pope, Sr.: A Pillar of Faith, Family, and Community

Daniel Ball Pope, Sr., a devoted husband, father, and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully on March 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 7, 1926, in Harlan, Kentucky, Mr. Pope lived a life marked by unwavering dedication to his faith, family, and community.

As a faithful Christian, Mr. Pope sought to honor Jesus Christ in every aspect of his life, exemplifying a commitment to service and devotion that inspired countless individuals. His love for his family was evident in the way he led them with steadfast care, generosity, and devotion. His wife of 75 years, Eleanor Ruth Alice Buttermore Pope, and their children, Dr. Daniel Ball Pope, Jr., Rev. Dr. John Nelson Pope, and Eleanor Elaine Lucas, were the beneficiaries of his unwavering support and guidance.

Mr. Pope's life was also defined by his service to his country. During World War II, he served honorably in the United States Army, stationed on Guam and Saipan. Following his military service, he pursued higher education, attending the University of Kentucky and later earning a Master of Arts in Special Education from San Fernando Valley State College in Northridge, California. His academic pursuits were a testament to his intellectual curiosity and commitment to personal growth.

As a public servant, Mr. Pope served one six-year term as Circuit Court Clerk of Harlan County, Kentucky, and later devoted his professional career to assisting others as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. His work as an adjunct instructor at the University of South Florida further demonstrated his passion for education and his desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Throughout his life, Mr. Pope was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Harrison Pope and Mary Kila Ball Pope; his brothers, Henry Pope and Charles Pope, M.D.; and his son-in-law, George Lucas. However, his legacy lives on through his wife, children, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, his sister, Katherine Pope White, and his brother, James Glenn Pope, as well as an abundance of nephews and nieces.

Those who knew Mr. Pope will remember him warmly and gratefully for his strength of character, kindness, and intellectual curiosity. His love for reading, genealogy, jigsaw puzzles, and working outdoors was evident in the way he approached life with a sense of wonder and enthusiasm. His faith in Jesus Christ informed every aspect of his life, and he was diligent in reading and studying the Scriptures and the writings of theologians, particularly Martin Luther.

As a Presbyterian Elder at First Presbyterian Church in Bradenton, Florida, and a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Parrish, Florida, Mr. Pope exemplified a commitment to service and devotion that inspired countless individuals. His family and community will deeply miss him, but his legacy will continue to inspire and motivate others to live a life marked by faith, family, and community service.
