Sri Lanka's Sky to Come Alive: Derana-Signal Colombo International Kite Festival Takes Flight

The city of Colombo is buzzing with excitement as the highly anticipated Derana-Signal Colombo International Kite Festival has commenced. This spectacular event, which is in its sixth consecutive year, promises to transform the Colombo skyline with a kaleidoscope of kites from Sri Lanka and around the world. The festival, which began at 1:00 p.m. at the iconic Galle Face Green, has already drawn in crowds of enthusiastic onlookers and participants alike.

Organized by the Derana Media Network in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and the Sri Lanka Police, this international kite festival has earned a reputable position among the world's largest and most prestigious kite festivals. As per the International Kite Federation, the Derana Signal Colombo International Kite Festival is ranked an impressive ninth among 62 of the world's largest kite festivals, solidifying its status as a significant event in the global kite flying community.

This year's festival is expected to attract around 2,500 local competitors and 80 international kite flyers from 30 countries across six continents. The diversity of participants will undoubtedly make for a vibrant and dynamic event, with kites of varying shapes, sizes, and designs taking to the sky. The competitions, which will be held under eight distinct categories, will challenge participants to showcase their creativity, skill, and flair for kite design and flying.

The categories include Creative Kite, Creative kite featuring the Derana logo, Creative kite featuring the Signal logo, Magic Ice Cream most colourful kite, Kotmale most vibrantly decorated kite, Suncrush artistic peacock kite, DSI Beat best-looking kite – Under 15, and Signal night kite. With such a wide range of categories, the festival is poised to offer something for every kite enthusiast, from seasoned flyers to newcomers looking to test their skills.

The participation of international kite flyers from countries such as India, Australia, Germany, France, Indonesia, and China adds a unique dimension to the festival, allowing for a cross-cultural exchange of ideas, techniques, and kite flying traditions. The presence of these global kite enthusiasts is a testament to the festival's growing reputation and its ability to attract top talent from around the world.

In addition to the kite flying competitions, the festival will also feature a musical concert, the Derana ‘BOOM TOWN’ concert, which will take place at Galle Face Green from 7:30 p.m. The concert, which will feature the popular youth music group ‘Avatar,’ promises to be an exciting culmination to the day's events, offering a unique blend of music and entertainment to festival-goers.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all attendees, the Sri Lanka Police have implemented a special traffic plan around the Galle Face area. Additionally, 21 parking facilities have been established across Colombo for motorcycles, three-wheelers, and vehicles belonging to spectators attending the festival.
