Urgent Call for New Dumbarton Health Centre After Flood Damage Exposes Dire Need for Upgrade

The recent flood damage at Dumbarton Health Centre has once again highlighted the urgent need for a new, state-of-the-art facility to serve the local community. The ageing centre, which has been in operation since 1973, suffered significant damage following heavy rainfall, with interior ceilings collapsing and areas of the facility being left unusable.

MSP Jackie Baillie has been at the forefront of efforts to secure funding for a replacement health centre, urging the Scottish Government to prioritize the project. Despite the facility being identified as a priority by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, it has not been included on the SNP Government's priority list, with Port Glasgow being given precedence for funding.

The situation at Dumbarton Health Centre is not a new issue, with the facility having suffered damage following Storm Eowyn in January last year. The recent flooding has further exacerbated the problem, with staff being forced to resort to catching water in buckets to cope with the flooding. This is clearly not a sustainable or acceptable solution, and it is imperative that a new health centre is delivered as a matter of urgency.

Ms Baillie has written to both the Scottish Government and NHS bosses, seeking a commitment to replace the facility. She has pointed to the example of Alexandria's Bank Street Medical Centre, which was replaced by the state-of-the-art Vale Centre for Health and Care in 2013. This modern facility provides a base for combined medical, dental, and support services, and has set a high standard for healthcare provision in the area.

Clydebank's 1970s Medical Centre was also replaced in 2022, demonstrating that it is possible to deliver modern, fit-for-purpose healthcare facilities in the region. It is essential that Dumbarton Health Centre is given the same priority, and that a new facility is delivered that meets the needs of the local community.

An NHSGGC spokesperson has confirmed that repairs are underway at the damaged facility, and that all services continue to function as normal. However, this is a short-term solution, and it is imperative that a long-term plan is put in place to deliver a new health centre that can provide high-quality healthcare services to the people of Dumbarton.

The Scottish Government must take immediate action to address this situation and provide the necessary funding to deliver a new health centre for Dumbarton. The community deserves nothing less than a modern, state-of-the-art facility that can provide the best possible healthcare services. It is time for the SNP Government to prioritize the needs of the people of Dumbarton and deliver a new health centre that can meet the demands of a growing and diverse community.
