Kazakhstan Grapples with Devastating Floods and Mudsilides: Situation Report

A series of severe storms has battered Kazakhstan, triggering devastating floods and mudsilides that have left numerous homes affected. According to reports from the Kyrgyzhydromet, a part of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, storm warning alerts were issued between April 20 and 28, 2026, in anticipation of the impending disaster.

The situation took a turn for the worse on April 28, 2026, when heavy rains caused the canal in the city of Gulcha, Osh oblast, to overflow at approximately 16:45, resulting in mudsilides that inundated areas around nearby homes. In a similar incident, a brief but intense downpour in the village of Zhashasyn, Kyz-Köl Aiyl Okmotu, Suzak District, Jalal-Abad oblast, led to mudslides entering the yards of residential homes at around 22:30 local time.

The impact of the floods and mudsilides has been significant, with 92 households affected in the Osh Oblast, Alay district, and 4 households affected in the Jalal-Abad Oblast, Suzak district. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, deaths, or missing persons. The Red Crescent of Kazakhstan has been actively involved in assessing the damage and coordinating relief efforts.

The Osh branch of the Red Crescent has been working closely with the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MoES) to respond to the crisis. An inventory check of stockpiles was conducted in preparation for potential worsening of the situation, and a team was dispatched to the affected areas to conduct a needs assessment. A total of 17 hygiene kits are set to be distributed to affected households.

In addition to the efforts of the Red Crescent, the civil defense forces of the Alai District and the MoES have been reinforced to 386 personnel, 23 pieces of equipment, and 5 motor pumps to clear debris and address the aftermath of the mudslides. By the morning of April 29, cleaning works were underway in affected areas, with excavators, graders, garbage trucks, and motor pumps being utilized to clear mud from residential buildings.
