Maitri Bagh Zoo Takes Drastic Measures to Protect Over 400 Species from Scorching 45°C Heat

As the mercury rises to a scorching 45°C in Chhattisgarh, the Maitri Bagh Zoo in Durg's Bhilai district has taken extreme measures to safeguard the well-being of its over 400 rare species. The zoo's administration has introduced a multifaceted approach to combat the heat, ensuring the animals remain cool and comfortable during this sweltering period.

According to Zoo In-charge and Veterinary Dr. N.K. Jain, the intense heatwave has necessitated the implementation of special preparations to protect both human and animal life. The zoo has installed sprinklers, artificial waterfalls, and shade enclosures, while also modifying the animals' diets to prevent heat stress.

Dr. Jain explained that the zoo has taken specific measures for each species, such as providing Typha mats and coolers for the tigers, and setting up a pipeline connected to a motor pump to run sprinklers throughout the day in the deer, sambar, and blackbuck enclosures. Additionally, green nets have been placed in the bird and monkey sections to block approximately 80% of sunlight and shield them from the heat.

The zoo has also made dietary adjustments to help the animals cope with the heat. For instance, the monkeys are being fed water-rich fruits like watermelon and musk melon, along with vitamins that promote hydration. The white tigers, which are particularly susceptible to heat stress, are being supplemented with vitamins and minerals to ensure they remain healthy.

A wet moat system with continuous running water has been activated, allowing animals to cool themselves as needed. Visitors to the zoo have expressed appreciation for the efforts, acknowledging the importance of taking precautions during the heatwave. Pawan Kumar Pal, a visitor, advised the public to take necessary precautions, stating, 'One should leave their house only when it is necessary in this scorching heat... As we are also facing a heat wave, it is essential to focus on our health...'
