Wild Canvas: The Tribal Motifs of Rohit Shukla, A Forest Guard Turned Painter

Rohit Shukla, a 46-year-old forest department guard from the Seoni district in India, has taken the world of art by storm with his vibrant and thought-provoking paintings that highlight the importance of wildlife conservation and environmental protection. Hailing from a region that inspired Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, Rohit's journey as an artist is a testament to the power of creativity and perseverance.

As a child, Rohit was often mocked by his peers for his love of playing with mud and soil, but his passion for art only grew stronger. He went on to excel in drawing and painting contests, earning the nickname 'Gandhi' for his impressive depictions of Mahatma Gandhi. Despite facing criticism from his father, Rohit continued to hone his craft, eventually becoming a skilled painter, caricaturist, and cartoonist.

Rohit's big break came in 2019 when his paintings caught the eye of none other than Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan at an exhibition in Nagpur. The actor's appreciation of Rohit's work was a turning point in his career, and soon, his art was being showcased at group exhibitions across the country. In 2023, Rohit's paintings even earned him an invitation to the Rashtrapati Bhawan, where he had the opportunity to dine with President Droupadi Murmu.

Today, Rohit is on a mission to create public awareness about pressing wildlife, environment, and forest issues through his art. Inspired by the rich flora and fauna of the forests of the South Seoni forest division, he has created over 1,000 paintings, cartoons, and caricatures on diverse themes, including forest fires, conserving the tiger, and the importance of ecology and the environment.

Rohit's creations are more than just beautiful works of art; they are also a reflection of his deep understanding of tribal beliefs and stories. Many of his paintings focus on the tiger, an animal that is revered by many tribal communities as an ancestor. By sharing these stories through his art, Rohit hopes to create a sense of empathy and connection between people and the natural world.

Rohit's work has been recognized and appreciated by several notable figures, including former MP, CM, and current union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and current CM Dr. Mohan Yadav. His paintings have also been featured in the annual tribal-arts exhibition 'Silent Conversation: From Margins to the Centre', organized in Delhi by the Sankala Foundation in partnership with institutions like the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
