Political Row Erupts in Tamil Nadu Over Removed Plaque at Desalination Plant

A major controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after the principal opposition party, the DMK, alleged that the ruling TVK government removed a plaque bearing the name of its president and former Chief Minister MK Stalin from the Nemmeli desalination plant. The Nemmeli desalination plant, a Rs 1,516-crore phase project, aims to add 150 million litres per day (MLD) capacity to provide drinking water to around nine lakh residents in Chennai's southern suburbs and the IT corridor. The project was launched by Stalin in February 2024 when he was the Chief Minister. The DMK has taken strong exception to the removal of Stalin's name from the plaque, calling it an attempt by the TVK to erase the achievements of the Dravidian model government.

The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has denied the allegations, stating that the plaque was removed due to safety concerns. According to the board, the plaque was situated close to the main road and faced intense vibrations due to passing vehicles, which caused several stones from the top portion to fall. A safety inspection revealed that the bottom structural stones had also become loose, prompting officials to dismantle the loose stones and store them securely.

The CMWSSB has claimed that the plaque will be restored to its original form once the repair works on the culvert portion are completed. The board plans to secure the stones using additional heavy screws to counter future traffic vibrations. The works are expected to be completed by July 20. The DMK, however, remains unconvinced, viewing the incident as an act of 'fear and incompetence' by the TVK government.
