Breaking the Ice: Tenby Man Conquers Frozen Waters for Charity

In a daring display of determination and bravery, Alistair Bell from Tenby and his companion Beth Robart from Swansea, have completed the formidable Winter Swimming World Championship 2026 in Oulu, Finland. This bi-annual event, which took place between March 2nd and 8th, pushed the duo to their limits as they swam in icy waters without the protection of wetsuits, all in the name of charity.

Their incredible endeavor was aimed at raising funds for the Wales Air Ambulance, a charity that provides lifesaving air ambulance services across Wales. Alistair, no stranger to the world of ice swimming, having participated in similar competitions in the Arctic and Europe over the past nine years, was joined by Beth, who was new to competitive swimming but eager to take on the challenge.

As they prepared for the event, Alistair and Beth underwent rigorous training, swimming in the icy waters of Scotland and the Lake District. Their training sessions were not without difficulties, with the pair facing tough conditions that sometimes left them questioning their ability to cope with the demands of the competition. However, their resolve and commitment to supporting the Wales Air Ambulance kept them motivated and focused on their goal.

Upon arriving in Oulu, Finland, Alistair and Beth were met with temperatures as low as -0.5°C in the water and -13°C in the air. Undaunted, they dove into the frozen waters, completing six swims without the aid of wetsuits. This incredible feat of endurance not only tested their physical limits but also demonstrated their unwavering dedication to the cause they were supporting.

Both Alistair and Beth work within the trauma sector, where they have witnessed firsthand the critical role that the Wales Air Ambulance plays in saving lives. Their efforts have yielded an impressive £2,175 for the Wales Air Ambulance, a sum that is a testament to their hard work and the generosity of their supporters.
