Zentek's Hearst-Area Graphite Deposit Set for Summer Economic Study

Zentek's Hearst-Area Graphite Deposit Set for Summer Economic Study

Zentek, a research and innovation company based in Guelph, is preparing to release a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for its Albany graphite deposit, located outside Hearst in northeastern Ontario. This upcoming PEA is being hailed as the "single most important catalyst" for the company, according to CEO Mohammed (Moe) Jiwan, who has defined the Albany deposit as the "lead value creation asset" for Zentek.

The Albany deposit, situated 70 kilometers northwest of Hearst and 30 kilometers north of Highway 11, is a super-pure graphite deposit that has the potential to play a significant role in the global graphite market. Graphite is a critical mineral that is widely used in lithium-ion batteries, accounting for the single largest material used by weight. However, Zentek is taking a different approach than most graphite producers, who are primarily focused on supplying the electrical vehicle market.

As an igneous-hosted graphite deposit, the Albany deposit is "materially different from the conventional flake sources that populate the anode supply base," according to Jiwan. This unique characteristic allows Zentek to target a different set of buyers, including those in the U.S. defence, nuclear supply, semiconductor, and refractory supply chain. These buyers are willing to pay a premium for specification and supply-chain security, providing Zentek with a potential competitive advantage in the market.

To capitalize on this opportunity, Zentek has formed a joint venture with ALO Graphite Partners, a U.S. firm, to create Strategic Graphite Partners LLC. This partnership aims to draw attention to the Albany deposit and secure buyers in the targeted industries. One of the investor headliners in this joint venture is former NHLer Jeremy Roenick, highlighting the potential for Zentek to attract high-profile investors and partners.

The PEA, which is expected to be released this summer, will provide a detailed analysis of the Albany deposit's economic viability and potential. The study will include a new mineral resource estimate, outlining the quantity and quality of the resource, as well as the preferred mining methods, capital costs, and financial returns. This information will be crucial in determining the project's baseline economic viability and informing future decisions regarding the development of the deposit.

The last PEA for the Albany deposit was conducted in 2015, which estimated a 22-year mine life for an open-pit mine. However, the market dynamics for graphite have changed significantly since then, with the demand for graphite increasing dramatically due to the growth of the electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors. China currently dominates the graphite supply chain, particularly on the refining side, providing Zentek with an opportunity to establish itself as a major player in the market.

As the global demand for graphite continues to rise, Zentek is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend. With its unique Albany deposit and strategic partnerships in place, the company is poised to become a significant supplier of high-quality graphite to the U.S. defence, nuclear supply, semiconductor, and refractory industries. The upcoming PEA will provide valuable insights into the project's economic viability and potential, and is expected to be a major catalyst for Zentek's growth and development in the coming years.
